From laser scanning to BIM: how we design more efficient industrial plants

Proyecto Ramon Vizcaino - Ingenor

Expanding or upgrading an operating plant requires an accurate understanding of what is already there. At Ingenor, we combine 3D laser scanning of existing facilities, BIM modelling in Revit and energy strategy to design industrial plants that are safer, more efficient and more sustainable from day one.

The challenge: designing around what already exists

Most industrial projects do not start from scratch. Line extensions, new installations or process upgrades must be integrated into plants that keep producing, often with outdated drawings and years of accumulated modifications. A wrong dimension or a clash detected too late leads to delays, cost overruns and, most critically, unplanned production shutdowns.

3D laser scanning: reality, accurately measured

That is why we start with a 3D laser scan of the existing facilities. The resulting point cloud captures structures, pipework, equipment and service routes to within a few millimetres, providing a reliable basis for design. The survey is carried out while the plant is running, with minimal disruption to operations.

BIM modelling in Revit: every discipline in a single model

From the scan, we develop the 3D model in Revit, bringing process engineering, MEP systems, structures and architecture together in a single environment. Working on a coordinated model allows us to detect clashes before reaching site, produce reliable quantities and help clients visualise the final result before making decisions.

Designing on reality, rather than on drawings, means fewer surprises on site and shorter production shutdowns.

Energy efficiency and sustainability by design

The model is also our tool for reducing the plant’s energy use. From the earliest stages we assess opportunities such as process heat recovery, optimisation of industrial refrigeration and compressed air systems, efficient lighting and on-site solar self-consumption. Measures decided at design stage deliver the greatest impact at the lowest cost, and benefit the plant throughout its life.

Building energy strategy into the design reduces consumption throughout the plant’s life.

The result: projects that move forward without surprises

This approach gives our clients a reliable technical baseline, fewer changes and surprises on site, more accurate shutdown planning and a more efficient plant. The resulting model also becomes a valuable tool for the operation and maintenance of the facility.
